I woke up ...

I woke up very sore this morning. After breakfast I went for my run and it started raining but I got my 1.5 miles in. It rained pretty much all day so I watched movies and played some games. I worked on the rest of my requirements on and off almost all day. Tonight I went to Black belt class in Belmont. Had an Awesome time with Ms. Pam and got a lot of extra requirements in.

Day 2 with the Summer Camp Kiddos

Kids did great again today. Went to a new park, so I ran by myself to establish a route. Kids ended up waiting until back at the school to run. We worked on Stick forms while at the park. A little worried about my candidates that are out of the country this summer. Four of them. I hope they can still take advantage of the pre-cycle time! Went to a former students first MMA fight this past Saturday. He did great (Austin Munsch...for those of you who remember him) and won with a TKO in the second round. We were proud.

Today was a much easier to do my requirements because yesterday I had a lot to do. I think the hardest part of this journey has been all the essays. They can take me a long time sometimes. I hope every one else has been doing good with there requirements also.

Today has ...

Today has been an ok day. I got up very early so I could carry my moms work bags to the car for her then I went and cut my neighbors grass. It felt good to do things to help 2 people that I care for. After cutting the grass I played with my friend across the street for a few minutes then came back home to work on my exercises. It rained most of the day so I had to wait until this afternoon to do my running. My sister rode her bike with me while I ran so that made it fun. I took all 3 classes today and did day 2 of white belt challenge. I also had black belt class and I always really like it. 2nd day

To tell the truth my day was very uneventful I ran in the morning and the air was very thick which made catching my breath a lot harder, I finished my two miles in the end not with my usual grace or great speed. I went in to teach again I went in at 4:30 and stayed until the last class which I took and it ended at 7:30 but I stayed and cleaned a little while writing this I had just arrived back at my home. I feel tired to tell the truth my family is trying to help which I immensely appreciate no doubt but they throw out ideas which do not help me they try but in the end all that happens is we get in an argument and I will take blame for losing my cool from time to time but sometimes they do as well. Today i don't really feel like blogging much. So i will tell you guys what i did today. I finished all of my requirements, then my family and i went swimming in the neighborhood pool. After that, my mom, my sis and I had piano & flute lessons (i am the one who plays flute). Then, after that, we went home. So that was basically my day. Caio

We travele...

We traveled to Mississippi yesterday. We are on our way to San Antonio, Texas to see Russell (my cousin) graduate from basic military training. I was able to do my workout before we go to the beach today.

My First Log

So today is the first time that I have done anything in my journal and so far I am not doing the greatest, I made the mistake of clicking on the journal button at the top after I have halfway finished my journal and I thought well I will just hit the back button, well when I did that I found that if you do what I had just done that it will not save what you wrote down; so here I am again. With this being the third day I don't know what to think, because this black belt thing is taking up a huge part of my day, I have it split into thirds and so far I like doing it in one chunk but my dad seams to think that it will be easier. First Blog Post

With the wrapping up of my first real day of the cycle combined with class whilst I enjoy everything about going to the dojang whether it to teach or just to take class, I cannot help but have a shroud of doubt and worry in my mind. If some of you didn't know I have never done a black belt cycle at king tiger and I may have the shroud of the doubt and worry in my mind I am also very excited for it to help me for when I actually do my masters cycle(s) it also can help me be a better teacher as well as a student. today I went to the Mint Hill park to get my run and other workouts in it was fun to get my workouts in by a differant style to change it up a bit each time I think it helps me be more productive.

Very good ...

Very good day! Worked my crew pretty hard (and by extension, myself)! They were all doing push ups, sit ups, jumping rope by 9 am (without me telling them to) . Let them have some fun at the park and then pulled them away for some poom sae and self defense work. Only meant to work for about 20 minutes but ended up being about 40! Then we ran (walked/ran) 2 miles together around 4:15. It was tough, but now we know what we need to work on! The camper candidates had a Hyper Pro class and the Counselors stayed late and helped with family class and then took the adult class. It was blue stripe (sparring) so.......Did 3 assisted pull ups today. So hard, but I guess you have to start somewhere. The King Tiger 5K was great. Perseverance!

  I got up this morning at 4am and got everything done except jump rope, pullups, and miles.  I saved that for this evening after work.  Unfortunately, I twisted my knee when I was jumping rope.  I hope I can get an appointment with Dr. Bill this week so he can put things back where they belong.  Either way, I will persevere.

Today I we...

Today I went to work at king tiger lake Norman and did all of my jump, rope and sparring rounds for the day. After that we went to the park and let the kids have fun, while we were at the park master Chelley got all the cycle candidates together to do our poomsaes and s3 defences for the day. When we got back to 5 he Dojang we did our pull ups and things like that. At around 4:15 the masters and candidates went out for a 2 mile jog for the day, after that I was really tired. I got my leadership credits in for the day because I help out with all the classes throughout the day. While the kids were in the back we were doing our pushups and sit ups. While classes were going on we were doing our basic kicks.

Day 2 Rewarding But Difficult

Today was difficult, but so rewarding! I went running with the Hartles and a few other black belt cycle candidates from our Lake Norman school. I was able to get a lot of extra stuff in. I am looking forward to tomorrow and the rest of the week!

Well game on - - -it's time to focus and get a plan. Have a crazy few weeks coming up so the requirements are going to be all over the board, if some days I even make it to the board, but all is good. During cycle you are going to have your up's and down's then toss in some other obligations, unexpected whatever's, but in the end if you want it enough you will find a way to make it work out.

First day of Physical Requirements

Today was the first day that I did a full workout. I'm a little bit tired and its weird having to do a certain amount of pushups and situps. Today one of my masters, Master Justin Laloan, got back from a trip to New York. Also one of his students from New York came down for a tournament. He is a black belt and a really good martial artists from what I have seen. I'm hoping to pick up a few tricks from him. Mainly beginning to work on the 540 kick. I saw him do it today and it was really cool. Its good to have Master Justin back. It was different last week without him, just like its different when Master Burkhart or Master Thamn isn't around. I got my leadership credit today and I will get another tomorrow as well as a leadership 2 credit. We worked on...

Woke up ea...

Woke up early this morning a little sore. After breakfast I went running. Didn't have much going on today so I tried to do more of my requirements. Got a lot done before class today. In class I lead warm ups and part of a class. It was fun. Going to relax now :)

White Belt Challenge

Today when I woke up I was going to cut my neighbors grass but their little boy had pink eye so they had to take him to the doctor and asked me to wait until tomorrow morning. I'm excited about doing it tomorrow. So I got started on my requirements for the day and got everything completed except for my running, self defense challenge and meditation time then we went to the pool for a few hours. As soon as I got home from the pool I did my running and went straight to taekwondo class. I am doing my white belt challenge this week so today was the 1st day. When I got home from class I finished up my self defense challenge and started working on my next essay about the white belt challenge. Then I did meditation while my mom cooked dinner. Monday, June 23

Today was kind of a normal day. I set a goal to finish my requirements before noon, and completed that goal! My family and I jogged/ran a mile together at about 7:00am, so that was finished early! I am planning to work on my "art doll" for my new skill today! (details in my last blog entry). I also started to learn how to control negative thoughts about myself/others when i get really frustrated/angry/jealous.

  Today was catchup day to get all of the things done that have to be done when you return from vacation: laundry, pay bills, grocery shopping, etc., but I squeezed in some requirements too.  Now it’s time to look forward to Monday….

Another production day...

Today I woke up feeling sore from my exercises & the 5K yesterday. I started my day by going to church then I had lunch. After lunch I started working on my exercises and pushed through to get everything completed even though I was sore. Then I went with my mom and sister to get shaved ice which was very good and we went to the park where I decided to do extra exercises just for fun. I am going to play basketball tonight with my friend Jeran. I have had a great day.

Very hot did 5.1 miles today and did it at the wrong time (noon) not to smart but need to get use to the heat when August comes in with a roar. Need to work on double stick , bolo, and since we changed the numbering of second Dan one steps I have to get that set now also. I wrote them down , I know them by the old order but the new order I have forgotten them. Burkart out

My first day

Today has been very hard. It is my first day doing the requirements for the black belt cycle. I did not expect all the work and the routine that me and my dad did. I have to catch up because I missed yesterday because I had to go to Mooresville to play in the Powerade State Games for soccer.

Saturday

  I didn’t get to go to the King Tiger 5K today because I was returning from vacation.  This is the first one that I’ve missed since they began.  I’m sure everyone had a good time.  I also didn’t get to do as many requirements as I would have liked because it was a travel day, but I’m giving myself permission not to worry about it.  I’m glad to see that the required numbers have changed.  Thanks Master Evins and Inst. Uczen!  I still have over 100,000 pushups and sit-ups, but that’s better than 190,000….

Day 1 Starting Off

Today was the first day of the black belt cycle! I am so excited for everything to come! Today was tough, it was hard to realize how hard everything is. The push ups were the hardest. I knocked out 50 at different times, but after that it was difficult to do anymore. With a little perseverance I was able to finish. Talk to you guys Monday.-Evan

Let The Games Begin

--Kelsey P. June 21 2014 today the "King Tiger 5k"took place,I ran in this race with my dad(Stuart) we both finished with a time of 30 minutes and 40 seconds, thanks to all who ran this race with me and all the others to the finish. I believe this helped me realize that I really need to work on my leg muscles because I took a lot of pain from the run mainly in the hamstrings because i'm not that flexible but i'm trying to fix that. I also realized I need to build up the endurance in my legs, biceps, and triceps why you ask because when I went to go to push-ups I did 35 then said "oh man if I stay like this i'm gonna die in the test!"I also Highly need to work on pull-ups I don't want to even talk about those. Productive Day

Today I got up really early and ran the King Tiger 5K. It felt great to get the cycle started off with credit for a Saturday Black Belt class and get 3.1 miles done. Then I came home and my mom took me to Chick-fil-a for breakfast. We didn't have anything planned today so I have worked on my physical requirements through the day all day and got a lot done. I did play a little basketball in between exercises. I have had a great day but very tired.

Well got the King Tiger 5K done today and helped out with some set up and activities it was great to see everyone. Work on staff yesterday and am really ticked off as I had to refresh myself, there are so many things to practice that I have become weak in some others. The only way to change this is to somehow get back on at least one hour a day and only do say staff or sticks or something else but not a little of each, It does not work for me and most of all I have to generate the time. Last day on the beach and last day to leisurely do my requirements.  I’m going to have to find that extra two hours a day to fit those requirements in.  It will take a little time to work out a routine but I know I can do it because I’ve done it before and so has lots of other black belts that were on a cycle.  Just got to believe!

Tomorrow i...

Tomorrow is the 5K! Didn't get to run today, so looking forward to getting in a little extra tomorrow. I have only been going about 2miles a day during the week. Had some soreness today from my Top Team work out last night. Moved up to 15 lb kettle bells, so I am feeling it today. Going into the school early on Wednesdays and Fridays so that Conrad can go to Cross Fit. It is a good time for me to do some jump ropes, burpees, etc. Next week I will be doing them with my counselors and summer campers that are on the cycle..whoo Hoo!

Today was a pretty normal day. I started my day by running 1.5 miles then worked on my exercises for my regular class. It was very hot outside today so I stayed inside and started working on my 3rd essay. After I finished my essay me & my sister tried to go ride bikes but it was too hot for my sister so we came home. I went to taekwondo tonight and did both classes so I enjoyed my night. Looking forward to the 5K on Saturday. My mom picked my race packet up today so I am ready to go. I am really excited about getting the rest of the cycle started on Saturday too.

Added in t...

Added in the credits that we got for going to the GoodWill games yesterday. Fun to see the numbers change, even if not by much percentage-wise. Have run 9 of the last 11 days! Short runs, but it is a start. Lost a couple of pounds too. Happy face! Worked out 4 days already this week with Master Schneider, but now she has work peeps coming in town and will have to miss a few of our scheduled work outs. Sad face!

Today was a nice day out on the beach.  There was a nice breeze blowing.  I really enjoy sitting on the beach watching people.  Seeing all of the kids having fun on the beach makes me smile.  I’ve done a lot of requirements this week so it’s really frustrating to look at the “Left” column.  The numbers don’t seem to move.  Maybe I should just focus on the “Total” column.

Wednesday

Today was a great day. First thing this morning I started a tennis camp since I chose learning how to play tennis as my new skill for my essay for one of my requirements. Tennis camp was from 9-12 and I loved it. It was my first time playing tennis. I can't wait to get back next Wednesday to learn more. After tennis camp I came home and ran 1.5 miles and did my taekwondo exercises for my regular class then I went to taekwondo class. Then I came home and changed quickly to go to church and had a lot of fun in youth tonight. It has been a great day.

Yesterday was Cross fit again ran to the box, did my work out then ran back to the school. Very hot and very tiring, need a rest these long days with work outs makes it even longer. We have been enjoying class time but need to work on my mentoring sessions Burkart out

Good day. Got my big lawn mower fixed and got my small lawn mower ready for my wife to use when Im gone. She has not mowed the lawn in over 20 years, I let her try once and we will stop there. But I know she will do a good job, and keep my garden water.

Today is hump day and that is not a good thing when you’re on vacation.  I could really get used to having a life of leisure, although I am doing my requirements.  I’m getting in a lot of miles on the beach too!

Summer Camp

Yesterday was only the 2nd day of summer camp and I am already exhausted! Tuesdays are our swimming days and it just wore me out. 8 am meeting with Keith, ran and worked out at the park with Master Schneider and then Top Team at 6:30. Still haven't even attempted a pull up, but I did stare at the bar for a few minutes this morning:) I keep telling myself that I need to get a little better at my push ups before I tackle my pull ups......at least I am able to get alot of poomsaes and other stuff done while hanging out with the kids and I am excited for next week when I have 2 Summer Campers and 3 Counselors that go on the cycle. It will really push me to get some more stuff done.

Tuesday

Today I started my day off by doing my morning chores then went out for a run. Today I increased my daily run up to 1.5 miles so it felt great to start increasing so I will be prepared for my physical requirements. Then I came home and worked on my exercises. After I finished my exercises I called my great-grandmother to check on her and her and see if she needed help with anything. She had some yard work she needed done so I rode my bike up to her house and spread mulch and did other things she needed done. After I finished helping her I met my friend from taekwondo at the park in my neighborhood and we played basketball until time to go to taekwondo class then we just rode to class together. Monday

Today was a great day. I started by day off by running 1 mile then worked on my exercises for my regular class & to help prepare me for starting my physical requirements on Saturday. After I finished doing exercises, I spent a lot of time finishing up essay #2 which I chose to be one of the Living Hero essays. It felt great to get so much accomplished. Then my grandmother took me & my sister to McDonald's for lunch for doing so well on our report cards. I finished up 6th grade with all A's and 1 B. I am excited about going to 7th grade next year. Then I played basketball with my friends for a little while before going to taekwondo class. This week is costume week so we all dressed and had a lot of fun.

Tuesday

Let's see...what's new? I have been changing my diet recently, and it actually isn't too bad! For lunch I've been frequenting Trader Joe's a lot...mainly eating fresh wraps, sushi, and fruit. Trying to drink as much water as possible, also. Weekends are definitely the hardest for diet, but I'm doing better than I have in the past.

Another Day...

Today was a pretty good day.  I got quite a few requirements done.  I can’t find a place to do my jump rope though so I’m getting behind on that.  We are on the third floor and I don’t think the people below us would appreciate it if I’m jumping.  And if I do it on the beach, I’ll embarrass my family.  Oh well, I’ll catch up later.  I was hoping that we would finish learning through Palgwe Oh Chang before Master Evins leaves, but I’ve only learned up to part of Sa Chang.  Maybe they will work on it tonight.  If they do, I know I can count on Inst. Dege to send me the remaining steps!

Thank you for fixing my Black Belt webpage access, Mr. Uczen! Now I can start tracking my daily requirements (as soon as I can tally up the past couple of weeks.) Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to Black Belt class tonight. I can never predict what kind of day I will have at work and sometimes I need to stay late to admit patients to the hospital or to assist our physicians. Today was one of those days. I just got home, and even if I left right now, I wouldn't make it across town to North Charlotte in time for class. I'll get started on my requirements and hopefully that will help me feel less guilty about missing class (and causing my daughter to miss class.)

Summer Camp has begun which makes it even tougher to get the training in, time is needed but so is sleep and rest for the body, so trying to get it worked out will keep you posted but need those extra hours added onto the day as soon as possible

Sunday

Today has been a good. I started my day off by running a mile to get prepared for the 5K next weekend. After I finished running, I worked on one of my Living Hero essays and I am almost finished with it. I will be happy to have 2 of the written assignments completed. Then I worked on my taekwondo exercise card for my regular class. This evening a couple of my friends came over and we played basketball at my house for a long time. Then I came in and did some meditation time so now I am going to watch the Spurs vs. Heat game.

I was tired today.  The bottom of my feet are hurting from walking so much on the sand and my knees really need to be realigned.  I guess a visit to Dr. Bill is in my future.  It was a beautiful day at the beach today though!

Not a bad day, but a little warm on my run at 11 am . Still working on a full 2 mile run with out walking. But one step at a time and patience. Wish I had my pops running DNA.

Saturday

I got up this morning and it was pouring down rain, so no walking on the beach.  I spent time doing requirements instead.  When the sun came out at lunch time, I made it count!  I love walking on the beach.  I hope everyone took an opportunity to tell their dads how important they are.

Happy Fath...

Happy Father day. Call my pop yesterday to see how he was doing. At 79 he is still getting up at about 4 am and running 4 miles a day. He used to run 10 miles a day but cut it down to 4 about a year ago, said his time was getting slower. Also said something about seeing a old man in the moon shadow on is run. But I think he won't let that shadow catch him if I know my Pop.

Cheat Day

I didn't get as much done today as I would have liked because I was traveling. I was doing kicks in the parking lot at the grocery store. I guess I'll just call this my "cheat day".

Still can'...

Still can't update my requirement numbers on the tracking page of the website, but Mr. Uczen is going to help me figure out what's wrong. Great Black Belt class with Master Knight this morning at North Charlotte! I'm feeling a little stressed today.....Need to sign up for the King Tiger 5K this week. Need to register for the PMAA seminar in Myrtle Beach. Need to clean my house. Need to start researching and writing my essays. Need to catch up on some paperwork at my paying job. Need to finalize vacation plans for my family's beach trip the week of July 7th-13th. Much to do. So very much to do.

Not a bad ...

Not a bad day. Saturdays are my date nigh out with my wife. But today no date night. Chris went to lunch with her friend and her daughter that graduated today. So she brought home a little Italy from Maggiano's. Nice save me some money, and i worked on some requirements. :) love you Chris.

Friday

Today has been a very fun but exhausting day. I worked on my exercises some 1st thing this morning then I went to the park to play in a basketball tournament with my friends. 2 of my friends from taekwondo went to the park with me so we had a lot of fun together. This evening after everyone had gone home, I went over to my little friend Murphy's house (he is 3) and played with him. I love getting to play with Murphy so it made my day. When I got home, I worked on some meditation time, more exercises and then I ate dinner. We don't have sparring class or demo team practice tomorrow so I am going to enjoy one of my few Saturday's without any special classes.

Yesterday ...

Yesterday Alexander graduated from Piedmont High School so nothing got done. I tried to make it up today so I ran to the Crossfit class and completed a routine called Barbra, then ran back, it was a little to much with the heat and the amount of work out. Anyway it was fun and did get a lot done today in class and at Crossfit. Hope all the Fathers out there have a blessed dayBurkart out

FRIDAY!

  Thank goodness it’s Friday!  My shoulders are sore and my knees are popping, but I’m still chugging along.  I need to find a faster way to do all of my requirements…I’ll have to work on that.  It’s storming at my house right now.  I really like a good storm (as long as the power doesn’t go out).  I’m trying to decide whether to go to the sticks training at the beach.  I think it will be a lot of fun.  I looked up the Coral Beach Resort online and it looks like a really nice place.  I’ll sleep on it and decide tomorrow.

Today I got up & surprised my sister by making breakfast for him and taking it to her in bed. We didn't have much planned but me, my sister & several of our friends went to park downtown and played basketball for a while until it start pouring rain and we get soaked. When we got home I worked on some of my exercises before going to taekwondo. After taekwondo, I came home, ate dinner, helped my mom with several things she needed help with then a few friends came to my house to play basketball. My great-grandmother was having trouble with her computer so I quit playing for a little bit to ride my bike to her house to fix it for her. Getting Started

Well, it has taken me a few days to settle into my 'Master's-Journey-mindset', but I think I am finally ready to get started. Hopefully I will figure out how to enter my tracking numbers on the website!!!!! I have to admit that I'm a little (ok, a lot) intimidated by the scary number of requirements I will need to complete before my testing date in October 2015, but I know that the only way to get close to those goal numbers is to tackle each requirement one at a time and keep moving forward. I'm feeling a bit old-ish lately--stiff hips, body parts and joints that make weird, random popping sounds, and a little (ok, a lot) extra weight to lug around these days (which one of you made me eat all of those Reeses Peanut Butter Cups?).   I can definitely say I worked up a sweat today.  J  After Black Belt class I came home and had to finish up with jump rope, sparring, and a few more self-defense.  I’m beginning to feel that familiar soreness from requirements.  I guess that means I’m working hard.  I set up my YouTube account yesterday.  Now if I can just talk my kids into holding the camera while I do my stuff.

Color belt...

Color belt testing at Lake Norman. Went well! Hutchinsons tested for their High Red Belts and did great. I was very happy with the day...but did not get alot of Journey requirements done. Managed a "quick" run. Only 2 miles, but it felt like 5....got to get over my mental hatred for the running. I actually like it once I get passed the first mile or so, but forcing myself to take those first few steps.....

Today was ...

Today was the last day of school and very exciting. We only had to go a half day and it was our awards program. My chorus class sang the Star Spangled Banner and I was recognized for making A/B Honor Roll. Now it is time to get summer break started but I will have a busy Summer working on my black belt requirements. After school I spent a lot of time working on my 1st essay which I chose to go “How I can Apply Tae kwon do to my life”. I am almost finished and plan on completing it tomorrow. After I worked on my essay, I went to my regular taekwondo class then we had our 1st black belt class at the Belmont location which I really enjoyed. Master Shin ordered my new uniform today so I can wait to get to start wearing it next week.

Today was ...

Today was my last full day of 6th grade. I am so excited about tomorrow being the last day. I woke up excited and then I had my favorite breakfast which is pancakes. After school, I played with my friends in the neighborhood for a few minutes then I went to taekwondo and had a good class. I am working on my first essay and excited about getting the black belt cycle started.

I had a lot of fun last night dancing at Friday Night Live and playing with my friends. I had sparring class this morning and had a good workout. After sparring class I came home, had lunch, played basketball and went to get orangeades with my mom. Tonight we went to Hardee’s for dinner & now I am getting ready to play basketball and spend the night with my friend Jeron. Only 2 more weeks until I can start tracking my physical requirements. I can’t wait! It felt good to get started this week on the other written/meditation requirements. I am excited about the King Tiger 5K in 2 weeks too.

This morning I got up & got ready for another day of school. I am excited that it is Friday and the last day of EOG’s for 6th grade. I had a bacon, egg & cheese biscuit for breakfast then headed off to school. During gym we played basketball which I enjoyed because I like playing basketball. I am getting ready to go to Friday Night Live tonight and have some fun.

Day #1

This is my 1st journal entry. I’m excited to get started. Today I got up, got ready for school and had blueberry muffins for breakfast. We had EOG’s at school so I am glad to have that behind me. After school I had a little bit of time to play with my friend tonight then I went to taekwondo. Tonight’s class was a workout class. After taekwondo I played basketball with my friend Noah. Now I am worn out from a busy day and getting ready to go to bed.

Feeling good today. Except for my legs, my hamstrings especially are very sore. At least have to reach Sunday! Right now I am using my Sundays to recoup. Today is the 1st day of Summer Camp for North Charlotte, so I am sure it will be busy! I will definitely make sure to sneak in requirements throughout the day. Knocked some out this morning already. Cannot fall behind! Also, created gmail account this morning so I can set up my Youtube account to share training videos with SaBumNim.

First Step

  Well this is the first of many journal entries on my Master’s Journey.  I’m still trying to determine what I have to do each day to stay on track and the whole thing is very intimidating, but I’m just going to take it one day at a time.  It will take me a while to get into a routine, but I’ve taken the first step….
