Good Afternoon  There are some exciting things coming up in 2020, I turn 60, I have some weird family news coming in and I am testing for my 6th.  So exciting times are coming my way and looking forward to seeing what the future the up an downs along the way. Need to keep pushing remind myself to keep pushing and always have some help with my frie...nds to keep  me on track.  I am working way to much with my environmental work, 9Round and KTA Fitness. So this is going to be a challenge but need to continue to make time and work on a goal. I still live in Matthews and commute a lot to get my training completed. Over Doing It

Dear John   Well I over did it yesterday did the requirements, then spit wood then fixed the fire pit, then stacked wood so on. So guess whos hip hurts today. Yep you guessed it mine. I had a lot of pain last night if I tried to turn. Hip is definitely out of place so need to rest some today before I knock out the requirements.  I need to stress and get it back in place this AM, so wish me luck    John

Remember

Dear John    I am trying to remember if I sent you a note today about next week. I seem to be losing days with this Covid thing and sickness. Got some training in this afternoon with Tate so I had fun going over staff, sticks and forms.    So I hope I get credit for this post but I may have done two in one day.   Peace Out    John

Pain

Dear John    Yesterday was the first day I did not have any pain in my side. It was good to not feel that pain as it has had me worried a lot. I really do not need to go through that again. So I have been eating smarter even though I never ate bad and doing things steady but a little slower has worked so far. I think I will keep it up and try to get stronger ever day.    Keep up the good work    Peace out    John

What To Do

Dear John    So how do you get your strength back, it seems you are so weak after the illness, 12 pounds lost and you are exhausted after a 30 minute workout. There has to be something you can do to  get back in shape quicker. I know you are trying and I am sure it will just show up one day but right now it seems you are starting all over and it is so frustrating.    Peace out   John

Tired

Dear John  So I joined you on the zoom class today at the gym, are you crazy that was tough and you need to rest. I know you looked tired at the end of the workout, make sure you do not over due it. You need to be safe and not get your self worn out and back into the hospital. I doubt you can afford any more bills for the medical care.    Peace out   John

Class

Dear John    You did ok in class last night need to get the four count down but overall not bad with the pain level. I know you were worried as you had pain before class. Make sure you do not over do it and stay on course to get better slowly. You do not need a relapse.    Stay safe and well   John

Time to Post

Dear John    No excuses right, you even posted while in the hospital and now while at home watching your Dad. So you everybody else you need to get it done. Going to try to get more pushup and forms and stuff completed. I need to work on short stick form #2    I have done it got a video of me doing it for goodness sack. I just forgot to practice it more than a couple of times. \\   As usual  I do thing backwards but I do them well when they are backwards    So be strong and see you on the mat soon    John

Slowly

Dear John    I got a few things done today, this has been a rough two weeks with my pain and then my father terminal illness. I pray if ends softly for him and he is blessed. I hope he does not suffer. He has been a teacher, a friend and a strong man for many years. I always wish I could be a strong a he is. I got a few pushup, few sit-ups and a walk so I will do what I can.   I hope to get this done before the tea ceremony  but am worried how fast I can actually get it done .    Thanks for all the support from all the other Masters you have shown me how to be humble and move foward.   John

Last Letter

Dear John   I am going to go off grid for a little while, as you know with my illness and now my fathers terminal illness it has taken a big toll on me. I feel like I am stuck in a bad dream that just will not turn off. I have trained hard but when you are in a certain state of mind it seems you forget everything, turning, high block punches so on.    It has been really tough, last night I felt like I was letting everybody down, I thought I was stronger than I am, but the mind goes in other directions almost seems lost at times. I am going to keep moving that one foot in front of the other but it is  going to be a lot slower until all this heart ache goes away. Even writing this I am tearing up as it just comes...

TRAINING

Dear John    So i got some training in for i hour yesterday and about an hour and half today. Round kicks hurt Sunday but today not as bad. So getting better each day. about 85 percent right now almost 90 percent. Still week after an hour of it but by next week I should be up to some running and my general work-outs again.  So we will see time will tell and I will let you know John that all is well. Sleep is the problem right now as I have to stay up and watch my Dad now that he is in the hospital with kidney failure.  He is a tough old bird so need to keep him in check for a little while until the can get him into surgery.   Keep the faith , peace out    John

Healing

Dear John    Patience is a virtue and you need this virtue to heal. I know you you are stubborn and pigheaded but you need patience to heal. I have tried to tell you to heal before you begin again. It seems this time you are listing so keep it up and keep moving forward so you are a little late doing things. I know we talked that you feel you need to do it now since you are getting older so you can not stop but you have to enjoy the simple things and enjoy those moments then you can kick some butt again once you heal, BE SAFE    JOHN

My Dad

Dear John    When it rains if pours so I need to tell you that Old Tom is in bad shape he is in renial failure which means his kidneys are starting to shut down.  So he will have to go to the hospital tomorrow and we will see what we can do. I am scared and concerned that this is the beginning of the end. He has been a lot of things to me. I made him a little reminder tonight so he knew how much he means to us all/ Talk to you soon    Be safe and be strong    John    PS you know my horiscope indicated that there well be a lot of teas in 2020 and so far it is an accurate prediction but it also said I would be stronger in the end so let see how this shakes outs

So a Few Little Things

Dear John   So I am very emotional right now. Basically, the littlest thing can set me off. It just amazes me that one day I am strong enough to do about 5 hours of burpees, Indian runs, plank jacks, flutter kicks all with a 42.6 pound sack on my back and then three days later I can not even get up from a flat surface. That is so hard that most people can not do it. Then in a blink of an eye,  I am done and could not even consider any exercise and can not do it for so many days after now. So you go from a state of high to a stay of low in such a short time frame that you are depressed.   I know it will change but again just not now when I need to be so strong and ready to go. Life is a mystery...

Things I Have Learned

Dear John   Some of the things I have learned these past few days being in the hospital.   1. You learn who your friends really are and who really loves you 2. You learn that the simple things take way longer than they use too 3. You learn that the smallest things can take down the mightiest person 4. You learn not to rely on Goolge for self help ideas 5. You learn that the health care providers are some of the wonderful people in the world and how hard they try to make life better  6. You learn to make laughter as that is the best medicine 7. You learn to cry if you need to cry 8. You learn to show love for the littlest things  9. You learn to take care of yourself  10. You learn that life is a gift and to be thankful for everyday you...

Hanging In There

Dear John    I know you are still in the hospital so hang in there, I heard you finally ate some real food, that is good, I hope it does not irritate the pancreatitic area.  So far so good and hope to continue to improve, the pain with pacreatitits is so crazy strong it takes a grown person to his knees. Novant Hospital has done a wonderful job and really has been a blessing when I need it. Do if you think you are unstoppable think again, change things now so when you get older you are in better shape to fight when you have to fight just to stand back up.    Keep the light on   John

Trying

Dear John   I do not think this illness is going away anytime soon. Even if it does I still have not been able to practice since Weds night. It seems the universe is against me in testing for my 6th.   I had to cancel in April and then I may have to cancel now after being so close      I am really concerned    John

Biggest Fear

Dear John   Biggest fear is getting sick or injured before testing and not be able to test. How about you ?????   Well getting sick hit me tonight in class, I think it is stress related and maybe some food issues. I hear your dad has bladder cancer and is in need of surgery.  That is tough on you and him at his age. Helping him out put a lot of stress on you with when we got the news. There is no fever, just stomach pain. Hope that is all it is? We will see if it manifest into something worse.  Keep your fingers crossed    John

Time

Dear John    Time is running out and I am not sure how I am going to remember everything. Why is that???????? I did a memory test the other night and still remeber my numbers as requested 18,17. 12 14 , 6 , 7 , 10 and 15 is saved me 80 burpees.    But for the life of me can not remember certain forms hig punch or low punch back stance or front stance, it just is not good seems sloppy and I am worried not how I will preform.    Hope it all works out    John

How to be Sore

Dear John How are you doing, I bet after all those burpees and all that running and all the pushups you are one sore dude. The problem is you had to do it all with a 30 pound ruck sack on. Well actually 42.6 pounds when you add your hydrate and food and other requested items. Do not forget the 2 -7 foot pieces of PVC and bucket.  Life is about adventures and making memories and you are doing it so keep it up   John

Dear John    It ahs been a crazy time so far has it not? You had the death of Austin by suicide and last year your former boss jumped. It has just been awful but glad to see you are able to still see the light. Keep up the vision and stay strong, we need that right now in the word be the light not the dark.    John

Spartan

Dear John    You that urge you have to sometimes do something for you know matter how tough it is. I like challenges, that is why i have done the cycle more than most people. I want to see what my limits are, getting older sucks and I so not want to slow down. Sometimes I know I have to stop but right  now I just want to push on and on. So I am doing the Spartan Hurricane Heat on Saturday. I know you will miss me but I have a  least 12 hours of fun physical and team building challenges ahead of me. I will see if I can make it as I am sure I will be the oldest.    Peace out    John

Dear John

Dear John    So some of you know my story some of you have no idea who I am. I use to own a school in Mint Hill and two things happened. One I listened to bad advise and two I got burned out trying to balance life and students.  I distanced my self from friends and should never have done that. If it was not for the kindness of Ms. Evins and Master Evins, I would not be here today. I can not thank them enough for the opportunity to be back training for being a student again and for my friends. I don't know #3

Dear John    Seems I can not remember any self defense #3 yeah weird is it not, like every one 3 just disappeared. Thank goodness for my mentor who still has all #3 down. So we practiced and practiced  so I can catch up  on self defense. I am behind even though I have been practicing. I hope you are practicing as well and just remember you have it up there stored away you are just a little slower than others.  So during testing I just need to take my time and I will do just fine.    Peace out   John

Twitching

Dear John   So it sounds like a Disney film Twitching, leg will just not stop twitching, thought it was under control last night but today it is still going on. It really is making things tough to complete. I did a bunch of self defense yesterday and it just made it worse. Tiger stance Beom seogi is just the worse, I feel like I am going to collapse.  Well we will keep trying and keep working on a solution so hopefully it can go away soon. Only got a month left    John

OUCH

Dear John  So I about collapsed last night trying to do a tiger stance, yeah I know a tiger stance about made you go to the ground, the right leg would not stop twitching all last night and about gave out in chil jang.  When i got home then the left foot really hurt, with the right leg twitching and this am now the left shoulder hurts.  What the heck people, truing 60 in a month should not feel this way. I will not do any running today or lifting workouts so on. I have to work tonight but will try to rest and hydrate to see what is up. Sore so Sore

Dear John It seems I need a nap about every five hours as I am so sore from all the workout, training and mental workouts also. How about you, do you nap at all? My grandmother use to make everybody take a nap at 2 pm every day. If you were a visitor you have to nap also. I like that idea right now.   Well about time to take my nap    John

Workouts

Dear John    I heard you did a Spartan workout today with the Spartan 55 lb Ram, are you insane!!!!!!!!, my shoulders are so sore from the use of it. I only did 21 burpess with it and 120 sit ups with the 25lbs ram that I can not sit or move my shoulders. What to do, what to do, do you think we can get extra credit for using the rams and making them weighted  burpees?  I bet we can not but we should because I am so sore right now just typing this hurts.      John

Lunch

Dear John    Sitting here eating a late lunch thinking about you and how you are going to get everything completed.  I bet panic mode is starting to set in as it is almost September and with the virus, the lack of indoor training, jobs, so forth it begins to weigh on you.  So try to keep your head down, keeping leaning into the wind but don't spit into the wind.  Keep going and see you on the mat someday.   John

Dear John    Sometimes life get in the way of things, do you give up or make up. I hope you make it up and keep going and reaching for the goals. Never stop , never give in even when you are the most frustrated at the world. Things go up and down and you have to take both. Hmmm

Dear John    You are an idiot, so you have had five years to learn a new skill and you did not learn anything, what a waste of time, I know you started sign language but really you should be great at it by now. So next time do not wait until the last minute and say a gee  Wally you should have gotten it done. Think and remember and get it done everyday.   Pre-test done, felt good did not get up early enough for a longer run but did enough. Feelings

Dear John    I feel like we have been stuck in Groundhog day forever, you know wake up do the same thing every day over and over and over again. I feel like I have been training forever and am just not getting anywhere. Seems like one day I can break out but then I am dragged back in to the same thing. Rain

Dear John    I did not let the rain stop me today. Decided to Spartan up and get the miles in. I also signed up for all my Spartan Races for 2021, did you? Jacksonville, Las Vegas hehehehehe,  Charlotte,  Ohio , Carolinas, Asheville and a few more surprises in 2021. Hope to see you on the course. Train Train Train

Dear John    Spartans what is your profession, Aroo Arooo Arooo , I love that, I hope you do as well. Trained hard today did all my poomse self defense and  and physical requirements except the run, waited to long and the lighting slowed me down actually stopped me from going out. So I watched an episode of the Worlds Toughest Race on Amazon Prime. If you have not see it over 11 days these 60 some teams from 30 countries race across Fiji. I wish I had half as tough as these people are, they are amazing people and they make our little problems seem even smaller.  I hope to be as good someday as they are.    Well going to watch more rain and thunder, yard is flooded and so are the swales around the house, feels like a moot.    Be safe and see you on the mat    John

Slack a Lacken

Dear john    So I know you are not slack a lacken are you, if you are then you better quit now, pre test is coming up soon, I know with Emma moving back to college and work, good gosh so much work you have to be full and limited on time. If you are you need to make more time, it can be done. You just have to prioritize and get it completed. I heard you did this yesterday but almost was late for work at 9 Round. but you did'nt miss it and you did get it all completed. MONDAY IS FUNDAY

Dear John   Ha Monday is not funday, even though it should be, but how do you get going on such as tough day, work, people going crazy asking for impossible things, tired from doing things over the weekend, the list does on and on. What I want to bring up to you though is how this day set the week for you so you have to make it awesome which will carry over to Tuesday and then Wednesday so on. It keeps expanding until guess what the weekend is here. So from now on make Monday and awesome day and it will make the week the best ever.    Out for now   John

Mentor

Dear John So I have determined that my mentor is going to be a great grand master some day. It reminds me of Grandmaster Jung, more high, no good, do it again, what the bleep was that, well that is how my minds hears it. So i do it again, I stop and look confused when it is no wrong. So many things run through my head. I can not think clearly sometimes due to the pain I am in mentally.  I know you think this is harsh but you train for an hour every Sunday with your mentor and you will see, how the hot sun turns them into these crazed TKD masters. I know you just kid and frankly I love the strength of my mentor and knowledge, we laugh we work hard and makes me a better TDK student. Thank you    John

Leg Pain

Dear John   I have had severe pain in my right leg all day yesterday and some today. Not sure why maybe over doing it not sure, have you ever had such pain? I know you have said it before about your feet but not sure on the legs. I sometimes have to run or workout to get the pain to go away, how about you.  Sitting is really tough and trying to sleep even worse..   See you soon and let me know if you have any pain after training tomorrow.   John

Train by the Sun

Dear John  It has come to my attention that you need to train by the sun. in other words while the sun is up you train, when the sun goes down you can stop. a wise Grandmaster in North Charlotte told me this. So I guess this is why you are always sore, legs hurt, shoulders hurt and mind slowly fading.  Being 60 this year is going to be fun watching. So train until you can not see the sun any longer and you will make it.  John

Tammy B -Day

Dear John    So I heard you had a great day with Tammy fishing in Blowing Rock. I heard you got a Zoom workout with KTA Fitness and Alexander as well as a 1.6 mile mountain run. That is really a good day. I have determined as I am sure you can as well that a 1 mile run in the mountains is like 3 miles at home. I think at times you feel your heart is going to burst out of your test. I heard that if you could train there everyday you could really increase your Spartan Races.  Well get home safe and see you on the mat soon.  John

Dear John

Dear John It has been since March 20 that we had a talk. This Covid 19, bleep is really messing with us. I hope that all are well. Took a little time to day to celebrate Tammy's Birthday, we joke that she is 64 but actually 59 today. I know she is going to blast me with jokes at 60 this October. So I am getting my licks in now.  Looking forward to getting this cycle completed with all you October babies , we will all do well during this unusual time period.  Keep good faith and be strong. Tough Times

Dear John    I have been out and not written since you went to Instructors Camp. I have had a tragedy in the family issues. As you know Tammy's niece husband of two weeks killed himself in Utah, then they got stuck in Utah because of the earthquake then had to drive to Vegas to get out only to find the tower was closed because of the coronavirus. I had to move the gym since we are closed for 21 days and get everything into the new place. So I know I do not like excuses but man has it been tough. I really am glad to see you in virtual class today. It was fun to sweat today. I have been working out each day but not enough runs yet, need to get back into it so we can be ready for the first spartan race. So see you all in 21 days...

Sadness

Dear John    I noticed you have been out of pocket for a few days, and understand it has been a rough weekend. We have issues with the virus Nationwide, Union County where you live got E.Coli for a few days, biological parent issues, and sadness with the death of Austin Harker who just married Tammy's niece Krystal only 2 weeks ago. Austin could not beat the demons in his head and took his own life on March 12, 2020 in Utah. It was very tough to hear and not be able to help Tammy's niece, frustrating, sad, mad quilt, anger, and many more emotions that run through your head trying to figure out the impossible. It is amazing we can fight like hell when we get Cancer and strive to beat it but depression and demons in the head we can not fight. I wish we could. It is tough for someone...

Trying to Reach for the Stars

Dear John    I know you sent a bunch of goals this year so running a Spartan Race in Montana is a goal? Geez what are you thinking. Anyway hope to see you and Alex in Dallas on April 29, to May 1 then onto your race on May 2 and return home exhausted on May 3rd. Good luck with that in reaching for the stars.   You have been gone the last three weekends off hopefully you can get some things done this weekend that are needed around the house. Dear John  They say hard work pays off so I guess it should be paying you a lot right now.......lol I know you are having trouble with the gym build out and the results of the size of the gym but keep working it will all come together someday and you will reap the rewards. Dear John

Dear John    So i have been traveling a lot these past two weeks with a Spartan Race and then a wedding both in Florida, then on top of that i hurt my shoulder and elbow trying to punch hard and strong in class. This age thing is tough. I did get a bunch of requirements completed but still could do more. So I will keep trying if you keep trying. You may be better than me in some areas but I will always finish the race.    John

Spartan

Dear John I hear you did good in Jacksonville this weekend, 14 out of 54 in your age group in the Super and 5th out of 35 in your age group in the Sprint. Not a bad weekend. So 9 plus miles 150 burpees, at least 58 pullups to get over the obstacles. So not bad. Keep it up and stay strong.  it will all pay off in the long run.  Which actually comes up in July right for the Spartan Ultra 27 miles plus 60 obstacles.    Good luck better you than me.   John

Loosing My Mind

Dear John Either you or I am loosing our mind. So many things to do with the new gym location, 9 Round marketing and Tae Kwon Do. It seems to all be running together and by the time 9 PM comes around you are just to tired to do anything else. Like sending me a letter or noting the work you did for the day. Heck Saturday you did three workouts and still cut wood at a neighbors house. Are you insane!!!!!!!!. I know I am so you must be also. Time is running out so you need to focus on Korea then the rest of your stuff. It is right around the corner and we must be ready. Time

Dear John   Need to invent a way to create more time. I guess I could try to find my inner Harry Potter and get  charm like Hermine. I could design and develop a time machine and travel back and forth. I could ask Superman to change the axis rotation of the earth. Any of these options will assist you John in getting more training time. Best idea yet is to get some of Master Evins hair and/or DNA and create my own Master Evins. Yes best Idea yet cloning is the way to go then I can train train train as needed.   John

Come on John

Dear John  I hear you missed the community service project, not good, I know you have been busy with the new gym remodeling and equipment moving but you have to stop and get it done. So what that you are paying two rents and have to work until 10 pm and on weekends. It is just to much for even me to understand. I bet you will be sure glad it will be done soon.  Need  for you to stay focus but rest some so you do not burn out. It will be bad if that happens. Oh John

Dear so  John  I am as sore as you always say you are. I am sore in my shoulders and legs between 9 Round clients kicking, King Tiger clients making me fall I am sore. I see you did 90 burpees in your spartan work out yesterday geez are you crazy. You must be but then again I guess that is why you are sore.  The work out for the Spartan as I understand it was  1. 30 Burpess with the Spartan 22 lb Ram 2. Hang with 20 knee tucks 3. 10 minute max out jog at 15% incline  4. log squats 30     3 rounds  so I hope you get ready for the first Race in February.  Well good luck you are going to need it.

Training

Dear John Noticed you at the park the other day, seems Master Tucker, Master Dedge was working hard you were just laughing, what up with that. Get it together man and work hard. You may have been there 2.5 hours but you were laughing for 2 hours. So stop and get yourself motivated to do the work to get better. I am sure you were actually working as I noticed you did about 45 forms from sticks, staff and poomse in the credits so keep it up. Can not wait to see you out there next weekend. Oh John you are behind already, why I am sure you can provide me an excuse but I more than likely will not accept it. I feel you need to not work three jobs, and not take on every bodies activities to get things done. You need to work on allow others to do some of the work. I know you will say they are idiots and can not do it as fast and well as you.  This may be true but you have to not give your self a panic attack when you realize you do not even know the schools address. Dear John New Year New You

John  I see you took a day off and more than likely needed a day to rest, 80 pull ups in one day had to make you sore. So overall, I hope you had a good day off, and a good celebration. Dear john   Time is changing so this is my last note to you for 2019. I am excited to see how 2020 comes along. Never thought you would make it to 2020. Kind of surprising. Workout

Dear John    If you want to get some sparring rounds in you need to get them done as soon as possible. Go to a 9Round and get some completed as soon as you can in between each round do your pushups, situps and burpees. This way you can get a lot completed in 30 minutes. Hangover

Dear John Thought I would have a hangover after the holidays, not working out for one day seemed like it would kill me. I definitely had a workout hangover, but it was from being ideal and not doing anything and just sitting around with everybody. I did cook all day but that is different than burpees and pushup and well you know. So today we worked on double up on everything and made some progress. Merry Christmas John

12/25/19 Dear John  It has come to my attention that a young girl named Virginia asked about Santa Claus, well it ended with Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus. It was also proven by the US Postal Service on Miracle on 34th Street. S o you see by past experiences and case law there is  Santa Claus. So believe in the magic John is warm and forgiving, just as it should be this time of year. There is a great story about how in World War I the opposing sides for one day but down their arms and had Christmas Dinner together, it was truly a silent night.  Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night    John

Well getting harder and harder to make things work, been really busy with my environmental job, actually the roof has come off it is so busy up till midnight trying to get things completed and still work out, I have not been to a training class in about 2 weeks due to the environmental work and having to make sure I still have a family. I have been working out and doing forms and self defense, staff and some stick forms. I have been also doing sword but have missed several classes and they want to test in March, ha I do not think that is going to happen. Anyway going to enter all me stuff today so do not think I did it in one day just the amount over the last couple of weeks.

Ok so afte...

Ok so after six hours of training Master Jennings finally won, I am really tired and am going to be really sore. So I have a bunch of sparring rounds coming to me and I will have to figure it out, but wow, now understand what it is like to train with an Olympian he is a great person and I wish him all the best sorry so many of the king tiger family missed this great day. The knowledge of TKD is amazing and the speed is like lighting. He can kick you from anywhere and anytime I know I actually got to spar him and he was really nice to me and not make me look bad, thank you sir. Burkart out
