So yes, these journals are going to get very 'music' oriented and focused, so expect me to nerd out on many things that I will not elaborate on because I am just so quirky :D.
MY VOICE BE CHANGIN' GIRLIES!
So I am a tenor, which an average tenor has a range of a B2 to a C5. My range, however, is an A2 to a D6. This is mostly due to musical theatre songs being far more demanding than an average choir or pop song, though there can be exceptions. This training is even more rigorous because theatre songs require emotion in order to work. If you want to sing a song in a way that makes you sound far better than what you blank-slate voice is, add flavor and emotion. The lower you sing, the more emotion you are directing towards the audience, as if you are having a conversation, while the belts and operatic head notes invoke the deep, internal emotion of not just the song, but who is singing the song. For today's example, I will use 'freeze Your Brain' from "Heather's".
DEEP DIVE INTO BRAIN FREEZES!
J.D. is the character who sings this song, and on the surface, it seems as if he is singing about how the 7-Eleven him and Veronica are at a date at is what allows him to escape the stresses of the outside world. Which in the beginning, it does seem that way. But 'Freeze Your Brain' is the deep dive and foreshadowing of J.D.'s character, where we get a hint of his insanity and what caused it. J.D. is basically talking to the audience and Veronica about the 7-Eleven, like a joke number. But, as we get to the end, J.D. looks more into the audience than Veronica, like he is hiding something. He ends the song in a C#5, that DOES NOT WORK UNLESS IT IS BELTED! J.D. is screaming his internal insanity, which he is able to hide thanks to his deep love for Veronica, and how she is the only perfect person in this broken world. This belt is the hardest part of the song, but is satisfying, in my opinion, to hit and allows both the singer and the audience to take a breath and truly bathe in the emotion of loss J.D. seems to portray. I love this song, and performing it live is even better, which is why the audience comes out of Act 1 knowing 'Freeze Your Brain' will be the basis of J.D. villainous downfall.
THE END!
So after me nerding out about music because literally nothing happened today that was worth me journaling about, I am going to finish the APUSH assignment I have been procrastinating since I got home, and I will journal to y'all tomorrow :D.
